The Javier Valentin Story, Part 1: The Beginning.
Contrary to popular belief, Javier Valentin was not sent to us from heaven by the gods, but rather was born in Manati, Puerto Rico to mortal parents on September 19, 1975.
He left home at the tender age of 5 to pursue a career as a MLB catcher. Although he was more talented than men 20 years his senior, no one would give little Javy a chance. "I can't start a 5 year old catcher," managers were heard to say. "Even if he is a switch hitter!"
Undeterred, little Javier returned home and in 1993, graduated from Fernando Callejo High School in Manati, where he won the RBI title in each of his last 3 seasons.
